!!!!
TABOO 2003 LEIGH BOWERY If anyone wants to know what became of the surplus
three-shades-of-green, custom-dyed ostrich feathers (with added lurex) used
to create a second act Broadway costume for George O’Dowd (a/k/a ‘80s icon
Boy George), look no further! You will find it on Leigh Bearery’s “Ich Bin
Kunst” costume replica. Taking “pleasure in things that make men shudder,
…dressed up in the wardrobe of [his] mother,” Leigh Bear’s outfit begins,
naturally, with a nude lace-up corset and green iridescent stockings. The
ostrich-feather/lurex skirt is obvious; what isn’t is his green silk-satin
hoop skirt beneath. He wears a matching green silk-satin spencer jacket, with
its distinctive low (cleavage-revealing…) cut and narrow lapels. The long
sleeves are feather-and-lurex cuffed; and the garment is lined in an iridescent
green-blue silk-satin. On his feet are two-tone, green leather lace-up heels;
and his glittered “hair” and brows have been made of black dripped rubber.
To complete his “trés, trés debonair” look, note the red/black lips, and blue,
purple and pink shading around his eyes, cheeks and chin. The zeitgeist of
London’s decadent, fabulous club scene in the 1980s is captured here to outrageous
perfection: He is art – touched “by the hand of cool”!
